Varah Temple

The Varah Temple in Pushkar is one of the largest and oldest temples in the region. Dedicated to Varaha, the boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu, this temple stands as a testament to ancient Hindu devotion. According to legend, Varaha rescued the earth from the demon Hiranyaksha, who had submerged it in primordial waters. Once towering at 150 feet and adorned with exquisite Hindu sculptures, the temple faced destruction first by the Ghaznavid army during the reign of Arnoraja (1123-1150) and later by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Despite these devastations, remnants of its grandeur, including broken stone lintels and carvings, are still visible around the temple grounds.

Sacred Structures: Temple History and Architecture

The Varah Temple is renowned for its historical and architectural significance. Originally, it was covered with intricate Hindu sculptures, showcasing the artistic prowess of its time. The temple’s towering structure and detailed carvings made it a prominent landmark. After facing destruction, it was restored by Hada Chatrasal of Bundi. Today, the temple grounds still feature scattered remnants of its former splendor, providing a glimpse into its glorious past. Nearby, Varah Ghat remains an important site, and the 7.0 Kos Parikrama pilgrimage often begins from this revered location. Additionally, a charity home was established near the temple by Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore, a notable Shaivite patron.
